Flame Retardants
One of the principal applications of expandable graphite is as a flame retardant. Heat has the effect of instantly dispersing graphite layers, and graphite particles expand to many times their original volume. This retards the spread of fire and minimizes one of the most harmful effects of combustion, the creation of toxic gases and fumes. Furthermore, expandable graphite slows down the spread of fires and works to prevent the diffusion of gases and fumes.
More and more firestopping systems now rely on expandable graphite to provide the expansive force necessary to close off gaps and hales during the course of a fire.
